We visited the Salone del Mobile Milano 2017

We had an inspirational visit this month to the 56th edition of the Salone del Mobile Milano. Widely regarded as Europe’s foremost furniture fair, the Milan Design Show is an eagerly anticipated event on the international design calendar. This edition was an excellent opportunity for the team to see at close quarters the latest designs, innovations and technological developments from industry leaders.

A highlight of the exhibition was the Euroluce arena which is emerging as the global benchmark for lighting exhibitions.

The Flos lighting exhibit was a standout. Light was set in motion with minimal, tubular lamps travelling simultaneously along linear, parallel tracks (see below video). Sleek, contemporary and strictly edited experimental pieces from notable guest designers for Flos made use of the latest technology and revolutionary, eco-sustainable materials.

Colour, geometry and metallics collided with many lighting designers showcasing richly coloured and gilded pieces.

At Icone, decorative light met art installation, as wall mounted metallic discs opened and closed creating shadow play across walls, like moons waxing and waning.

Many of the design houses were in the pink, with muted shades of blush rose and warm, flushed taupes.

There was a lush, tropical feel as planting crept indoors and greenery was incorporated in verdant lighting schemes. The focus was also placed on exterior lighting and outdoor living through the use of cleverly lit planting.

Great design is in the very fabric of this cultural city and during the week of the show it permeated the atmosphere with design pop ups, art exhibitions and installations at every turn. It was impossible to visit without absorbing this Milanese magic and we are excited to see it diffuse through our own work back in the Jigsaw design studio.
