A Coastal Home with an Australian Influence

INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE
CHRISTCHURCH, DORSET
When our private clients first came to us, they were planning a complete life change - leaving London behind for a move to Australia. The pandemic shifted those plans, and instead they chose to stay closer to family, settling on a coastal location that could still offer a slower, more relaxed way of living.
The home they found had a wonderfully quirky character, and one of our biggest priorities was to honour that. As interior designers leading the interior architecture, we were careful that the extension enhanced the existing building rather than competing with it. Preserving the charm of the original exterior while introducing something new was a challenge we embraced from the start.
Our concept drew inspiration from the move that almost happened. We leaned into a subtle Australian influence, interpreted through a more brutalist design language. Concrete render, lime plaster ceilings and organic timber finishes created a raw, textural palette. Nothing felt overly polished – the beauty was in the imperfections and the honesty of the materials. The result was architectural yet warm, grounded yet relaxed.
We explored several layout options to ensure the home was properly future-proofed, and the trust the clients placed in us made the process incredibly collaborative. Every decision – from the extension design to the exterior cladding and interior finishes – was considered as part of one cohesive vision.
With a comprehensive design package prepared before works began, the clients were able to fully cost the project and make informed adjustments, keeping control of the budget without losing the strength of the concept.
The home feels calm, characterful and deeply personal – a coastal retreat with a quiet Australian spirit, designed to grow with them for years to come.
The concepts for the bathrooms serve as a visual representation of our ideas, allowing us to communicate effectively with our clients in the early stages. While not a final design, these conceptual mood and sample boards provide a reference point for ongoing discussions throughout the project. They may also be utilized by developers to showcase to their investors.
Jigsaw’s mantra is to treat each new project as an individual entity, providing a fresh perspective to residential and commercial design.
We endeavour to form long-standing, strategic partnerships with clients to become an integral part of the design team.
